The New York General Surgery Board Review
Department of Surgery Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Oakstone Medical Publishing
|
This comprehensive and intensive case-based review is designed to help candidates complete preparation for the American Board of Surgery qualifying, certifying and recertification examinations. It also prepares surgical residents for the senior level ABSITE examinations. The program curriculum is designed to match the subject matter of the American Board of Surgery requirements including current standards of care, as well as aiding surgeons who now are evaluated by the six competencies: medical knowledge, patient care, communication skills, practice-based learning, systems-based
practice, and professionalism. In addition to covering the six competencies, including "do not resuscitate"
orders, operative consent problems, end-of-life and other ethical issues, the expert faculty comprehensively updates the current state of the art in their respective fields.
The program combines didactic lectures, case-based presentations, question–and–answer sessions,
and meet–the–professor discussions providing a comprehensive review of the practice of general surgery. An illustrative and complete syllabus further reinforces your learning, and a new supplement to the course syllabus is an exclusive Review Book – “Pearls for Surgical Examinations” – which expands on the presentations and focuses on the details of frequently asked questions (FAQs). A mock oral examination presentation will help prepare participants for
the oral examination portion of the certification process. For physicians not actively preparing for examination, the program provides a broad
review of the current practice of general surgery. |

Cardiothoracic Surgical Critical Care Volume I
Oakstone Medical Publishing
|
| Program Director: Nevin M. Katz, MD
This Cardiothoracic Surgical Critical Care program is dedicated to further advancing knowledge and expertise in the complex field of cardiothoracic surgical (CTS) critical care. It is designed to bring together those who provide care for CTS patients in a setting which facilitates dialogue and the sharing of ideas and expertise. Topics highlight the challenges of the multiple disciplines involved, resulting from the unique physiological changes and complications that occur with cardiothoracic surgery. The program is organized by body systems, as all are affected by cardiothoracic surgery.
CTS critical care requires a detailed knowledge of multiple medical and surgical disciplines and extends across paramedical disciplines such as nursing, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, speech therapy, extra-corporeal perfusion, interventional radiology and pharmacology. Practitioners include not only physicians, but nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, perfusionists, nutritionists and pharmacists.
The new technologies available for CTS critical care provide the potential for more accurate diagnosis and decision making. Similarly, the new pharmaceuticals have the potential for greater specificity and greater potency. This program details the extension of the inherent precision of CT Surgery from the operating room to the Critical Care Unit. Effective decision making and modern technology will increase precision, effectiveness, safety and overall patient comfort.
