What a colleague had to say about last year's course

    Dr. Patel,

I want to express my sincere thanks for the exceptional effort you and the other members of the Anesthesiology staff at UPMC put into the Board Review I attended in May 2008.

I was originally Board Certified in 1988 and had a lifetime certification, however I felt I owed it to myself to take the recertification exam as a measure of how I stood in the profession after all these years. Thanks to your excellent effort and the efforts of your colleagues I was able to pass the January 2009 exam.

I just wanted you and Oakstone to know that attending that Board Review course was the best time and money I ever invested and I would be willing to let anyone know what a great job you all did. It was, overall, one of the most gratifying experiences of my professional life. In addition, the material made it possible for me to be a better teacher for the Anesthesia transitional residents that come through our teaching program every year.

Once again, thank you for all your hard work.

    Stephen J. Stefani, MD
    Director Anesthesia Services
    Broadlawns Medical Center

Program Information

The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology is pleased to present the 2009 Anesthesiology Board Review Course. Our dedicated teaching faculty is highlighted in this course, designed to provide anesthesiologists and anesthesiologists in-training with current and relevant information to prepare for the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) Certification and Recertification examinations.

This fourth update of the popular course offers participants the unique opportunity to review key topics in the formats of lecture sessions with audience response, high-fidelity human simulation sessions, and individual practice oral examinations.

This updated lecture series will be presented by clinician-educators that regularly practice and teach the content area. Each lecturer reviews sample board questions to provide practice and reinforce learning.

Optional simulation sessions take place at the University of Pittsburgh’s award-winning Peter M.Winter Institute for Simulation, Education and Research (WISER). University faculty who design simulations and regularly teach CME courses at WISER will guide learning. Make your selections on the order form to attend these sessions (sign up early to reserve your space).

Attendees also have the opportunity to prepare for the ABA’s oral examination by participating in optional individual oral examinations, in ABA format, administered by faculty with years of experience in preparing residents and fellows for these examinations.

The program is a useful tool in aiding practitioners who now are evaluated through the American Board of Medical Specialties’ Maintenance of Certification process. Board-certified physicians must build six core competencies to qualify for quality patient care within their medical specialty: appropriate patient care, application of medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, systems-based practice for optimal care, and practice-based learning and improvement.
