Board Review and Clinical Procedures

The University of Washington School of Medicine recently conducted the Radiology Review Course. The course will soon be available in two video formats to meet your needs—DVD and MP4.

The Radiology Review Course provides a review of all aspects of diagnostic radiology. Specific sessions cover most organ-based and procedure-based sections of radiology, such as vascular and interventional radiology, neuroradiology, chest radiology, gastrointestinal radiology, cardiac radiology, pediatric radiology, ultrasonography, genitourinary radiology, nuclear medicine, musculoskeletal radiology, and breast imaging. The program reviews the imaging features of the major disease entities in each of these sections.

Diagnostic Imaging Review highlights the fundamentals of the ten major radiology subspecialties by: presenting formal didactic lectures on organ systems and practical techniques, featuring multiple case sessions for each subspecialty, and incorporating recent technical and clinical advances pertinent to current practice. In addition to formal didactic lectures on practical techniques and organ systems, this program features multiple case sessions covering each of the diagnostic specialties.

Evolving technology improves radiological practice through improved image quality for anatomical interpretation and generation of functional data. The use of MDCT and fast, multi-phase imaging sequences also translates to a tremendous increase in data that requires review and handling and greater need for contrast and radiation safety awareness. This activity targets the community radiologist involved in body and cardiovascular imaging with a focus on developing an efficient workflow practice in the modern imaging environment.

The State-of-the-Art Imaging and Interventional Radiology program provides an in-depth review of vascular imaging and interventional radiology, as well as exploring important new developments that have occurred or are about to make the transition from the bench top to clinical practice. Leading experts from UCLA and premier departments across the country and around the world present cutting edge information on interventional oncology, peripheral vascular disease, stroke, AVM therapies, and pain management.

A significant portion of this activity is dedicated to advanced imaging of vascular disorders. Faculty provide a practical approach to each therapeutic modality and offer useful tools participants will be able to incorporate into their daily practice.

This activity is relevant to interventional radiologists, neuro-interventional radiologists, and radiologists whose day-to-day practice involves vascular imaging or various aspects of intervention.

Stephen T. Kee, MD, Associate Professor of Radiological Sciences and Chief of Interventional Radiology at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA is the course chair.

Within this term lies a range of capabilities spanning the gamut from 3D imaging, CT angiography to virtual imaging. Applications like CT angiography, virtual colonoscopy and 3D orthopedic imaging are becoming more mainstream and new applications like coronary CTA and runoff studies promise to be the next frontier in CT scanning. This program addresses the principles, exam techniques, and clinical applications in 3D imaging and CT angiography with a special focus on new applications like cardiac CTA.

This program is designed as a state-of-the-art update on all facets of sports medicine imaging for the radiologist, orthopaedic surgeon, and sports medicine physician. Didactic lectures on imaging of the spine and all articulations are provided. In addition, current thinking on musculoskeletal pediatrics, musculoskeletal ultrasound, cartilage, and post-operative imaging of the shoulder, knee, and wrist are featured. This course also provides panel discussions and interesting case sessions.

MDCT and MR Update: Body and Musculoskeletal Imaging program features helical multi-detector row CT (MDCT) and MRI as it applies to diseases in the chest, abdomen and pelvis, and musculoskeletal system. Newer and established cross-sectional methods are discussed. For MDCT, emphasis is placed on high-resolution chest CT, the diagnosis of pulmonary artery and aortic abnormalities, lung cancer and the solitary nodule, and use of multiplanar reformations (MPRs) for abdomen and pelvis. The use of neutral oral contrast material and proper timing of intravenous contrast agent with fast scanning is emphasized. For MRI, state-of-the-art techniques are addressed; especially, breath-hold imaging and its results. The diagnostic challenge of assessing manifestations of various focal and diffuse conditions in the liver is addressed with MDCT and MRI. Incidental lesions discovered on thin-section MDCT and their clinical significance is analyzed.

Musculoskeletal MRI is one of the few musculoskeletal imaging courses designed for both the beginner and the advanced practitioner in musculoskeletal MRI. The basic fundamentals of imaging, as well as the more sophisticated techniques are presented in this musculoskeletal video course. Up-to-date imaging protocols are taught, as well as imaging pitfalls to ensure that you properly identify musculoskeletal injuries. Particular attention is placed on the more commonly requested exams, such as the knee, shoulder, and ankle.

Overview of Available Digital Technologies by Christopher E. Comstock, MD

It is conducted in the form of didactic lectures, supplemented with case reviews, by experts in the field. The overall emphasis is on practical knowledge, specifically in preparation for maintenance of certification requirements for radiologists and subspecialty certification in neuroradiology. In addition, advanced imaging techniques and applications are presented to acquaint all participants with the state-of-the-art developments in the field of radiological science.

During the Breast Imaging component of this course, the practicing radiologist will become familiar with mammographic technique and the various adjunctive methods available to diagnose breast disease. These methods include ultrasound, MRI, spectroscopy, and interventional procedures. The radiologist will learn helpful algorithms to better direct the diagnostic workup. Management and follow-up review for highrisk lesions will be discussed. The value of the integrated approach to breast health will be emphasized.

The precise tailoring of treatment for patients with cancer is an unmet challenge. The goal is to only administer treatments that have a high probability of being effective. Imaging with PET/CT and SPECT/CT provides methods that will help achieve this goal. The program covers the current clinical challenges, the new emerging answers from imaging, and how these methods can be applied to patient care.

Short descriptions of the fundamentals of maximizing the performance of these procedures are presented and a greater emphasis is put on interpretation of the studies. Johns Hopkins physicians and visiting experts describe how to use PET/CT and SPECT/CT to help solve the problems encountered when treating patients, and nuclear medicine physicians with extensive experience using these techniques give insight into how best to tailor the studies for patients with various types of cancer.

Cardiovascular MRI/CT is designed for physicians in both cardiology and radiology. It covers all aspects of imaging and interpretation of cardiovascular MR and CT Imaging. Participants will learn about current as well as state-of-the-art applications of MR and CT in the evaluation of vascular disease involving the peripheral arteries and the abdominal and thoracic aorta. In the evaluation of cardiac disease, the program reviews the use of MR and CT in coronary heart disease, as well as in cardiomyopathy and congenital heart disease. New applications of MRI in the evaluation of perfusion imaging, quantitative cardiac analysis, metabolic changes and myocardial viability are also presented. Recent advances in the development of techniques and technology are addressed, providing the participant with the most up-to-date information regarding Cardiovascular MR and CT Imaging.
