The New York University Post-Graduate Medical School
Course Directors: Seth J. Orlow, MD, PhD, Bruce E. Strober, MD, PhD and Elizabeth K. Hale, MD
Dermatologists applying for dermatologic surgery privileges in hospitals,
ambulatory surgery centers, or outpatient clinics should be able to demonstrate
appropriate training, competence, and experience in many procedures. They
must appropriately select patients for either surgical or cosmetic procedures.
Training may be acquired through residency training, post-residency training
at formal courses, supervised instruction by skilled dermatologists, dermatologic
surgeons or other practitioners, and practical experience.
Also, there is a growing demand for dermatologists to be competent in the
diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the skin. Specifically, fewer dermatologists
are able to diagnose complex medical dermatologic conditions and subsequently
use both conventional and novel therapeutics that possess greater efficacy and,
more importantly, the ability to positively alter the lives of patients with serious
cutaneous disease.
Additionally, dermatology is a fast-moving specialty, with novel advances
in medical, surgical, and procedural/cosmetic dermatology made yearly.
Specifically, newer medications and modalities have been introduced
that promise (and often deliver) better outcomes with fewer risks. As well,
newer disease scenarios have arisen and this program addresses the best
approaches to better health-related outcomes.
Genetic alterations often indicate the risk of developing cancer and can define molecular
signatures suitable for radionuclide diagnosis and therapy. Once identified, they can be
targets for stable or radioactive pharmaceuticals to try to bring about complete or partial
remission of the patient’s disease.
This program in Nuclear Oncology covers imaging, dosimetric, and therapeutic
applications of radiopharmaceuticals and metabolic imaging agents, with descriptions of
how these techniques are being applied in the care of patients. The integration of imaging
to personalized treatment choices is also emphasized. More Information | View Formats

The precise tailoring of treatment for patients with cancer is an unmet challenge.
The goal is to only administer treatments that have a high probability of being
effective. Imaging with PET/CT and SPECT/CT provides methods that will help
achieve this goal. The program covers the current clinical challenges, the new
emerging answers from imaging, and how these methods can be applied to patient
care.
Short descriptions of the fundamentals of maximizing the performance of these
procedures are presented and a greater emphasis is put on interpretation of
the studies. Johns Hopkins physicians and visiting experts describe how to use
PET/CT and SPECT/CT to help solve the problems encountered when treating patients,
and nuclear medicine physicians with extensive experience using these techniques
give insight into how best to tailor the studies for patients with various types
of cancer.
This Cardiothoracic Surgical Critical Care program is dedicated to further advancing knowledge and expertise in the complex field of cardiothoracic surgical (CTS) critical care. It is designed to bring together those who provide care for CTS patients in a setting which facilitates dialogue and the sharing of ideas and expertise. Topics highlight the challenges of the multiple disciplines involved, resulting from the unique physiological changes and complications that occur with cardiothoracic surgery. The program is organized by body systems, as all are affected by cardiothoracic surgery.
CTS critical care requires a detailed knowledge of multiple medical and surgical disciplines and extends across paramedical disciplines such as nursing, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, speech therapy, extra-corporeal perfusion, interventional radiology and pharmacology. Practitioners include not only physicians, but nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, perfusionists, nutritionists and pharmacists.
The new technologies available for CTS critical care provide the potential for more accurate diagnosis and decision making. Similarly, the new pharmaceuticals have the potential for greater specificity and greater potency. This program details the extension of the inherent precision of CT Surgery from the operating room to the Critical Care Unit. Effective decision making and modern technology will increase precision, effectiveness, safety and overall patient comfort.
