Objectives


After viewing this activity, the participant should be able to:
  • Apply current approaches to the management of patients with infectious diseases, with emphasis on correct diagnosis and selection of appropriate treatment regimens
  • Appropriately administer new outpatient and inpatient antibiotics
  • Effectively manage common infections seen in the outpatient setting, including upper respiratory infections, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, dermatologic infections, and diarrhea
  • Understand the approach to patients with common central nervous system infections
  • Manage infections in groups at special risk, including those with HIV, solid organ transplant, hematological malignancies, as well as those taking TNF-alpha inhibitors
  • Understand how the emergence of drug-resistant organisms is shaping therapy of common problems such as community-acquired pneumonia, sinusitis, pharyngitis, urinary tract infections, and sexually transmitted diseases
  • Interpret and apply up-to-date information on less common infections in the U.S., including tuberculosis and infections in travelers
