James T. Pacala, MD, MS
Dr. Pacala, a board-certified family physician and geriatrician, is Distinguished Teaching Professor and Associate Head in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota Medical School.

He received his baccalaureate degree from Carleton College and his MD from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. After completing a residency in Family Medicine at the University of Wisconsin/Madison, Dr. Pacala obtained a Masters degree in chronic disease epidemiology from Brown University, and completed two fellowships, one in Health Services Research in Gerontology (at Brown) and the other in clinical geriatrics (at the University of Connecticut). He has been on the faculty at the University of Minnesota since 1992.
Dr. Pacala is a board member and current Treasurer of the American Geriatrics Society. He has performed research and published extensively on models of care delivery to geriatric populations and on innovative teaching methods. In addition to his research publications, Dr. Pacala has served as co-author of the AGS Practice Handbook, Geriatrics At Your Fingertips, which is now in its 12th edition having sold over 250,000 copies. Dr. Pacala has also been involved in several editions of the AGS comprehensive geriatrics resource, the Geriatrics Review Syllabus, as a chapter author, a special advisor, an assistant editor, and for the 7th edition published in 2010, as Co-Editor-In-Chief. He is extensively involved in medical student education nationally and at the University of Minnesota Medical School.
Dr. Pacala has received several awards for his research, teaching, and clinical care, including the American Geriatrics Society’s Outstanding Achievement for Clinical Investigation Award (2002), the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award (1999), the University of Minnesota’s All-University post baccalaureate, Graduate, and Professional Education Teaching Award (2002), and the University of Minnesota Academic Health Center Award for Excellence in the Scholarship of Teaching (2009).

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants caring for older adults will be better able to:

- Diagnose and manage geriatric syndromes, including dementia, delirium, urinary incontinence, malnutrition, osteoporosis, falls, pressure ulcers, sleep disorders, pain, dysphagia, and dizziness;
- Apply relevant information from the fields of internal medicine, neurology, psychiatry, dermatology, and gynecology to the care of older patients;
- Adjust patient care in the light of evidence-based data regarding the particular risks and needs of ethnic, racial, and sexual patient groups;
- Use quality indicators to assess and improve the care of older adults in their own practices; and
- Employ evidence-based data to increase the effectiveness of teaching geriatrics to all health professionals.

The American Geriatrics Society is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
