Program Summary
The AAPD designed a comprehensive pediatric dentistry program specifically tailored to the General Practitioner. This activity provides practical information, based on proven science, so that general practitioners can offer the best care for their patients. Broad arrays of topics presented include prevention, restorative care, pulp therapy, trauma, behavior management, and hard and soft tissue pathology. Experts in pediatric dentistry using lectures and panel discussions present the content.

Program Director
Michael A. Ignelzi Jr., DDS, PhD
Dr. Michael Ignelzi received his DDS, certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and PhD in Biochemistry and Biophysics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Ignelzi received his certificate in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics from the University of Michigan. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. Ignelzi is currently engaged in full-time private practice limited to orthodontics and pediatric dentistry in Greensboro, NC. He is also an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of North Carolina - School of Dentistry. He has published over 75 scientific articles, abstracts and book chapters and has made over 150 presentations to national and international audiences on orthodontics and pediatric dentistry.

Catherine Flaitz, DDS, MS
Dr. Flaitz is a professor of oral and maxillofacial pathology and pediatric dentistry at The University of Texas Health Science Center Dental Branch at Houston and the holder of the William N. Finnegan III Professorship in the Dental Sciences. Some of her honors include the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Education Foundation Research Award, American Society of Dentistry for Children Foundation Journalism Award and the 2001 George W. Teuscher Silver Pen Award. Flaitz was the 2004 UT-Houston President’s Scholar Award for Teaching Excellence and the 2005 Texas Dentist of the Year from the Texas Academy of General Dentistry. She has a special interest in the diagnosis and novel management of oral lesions in children and immunocompromised individuals of all ages.
Dennis J. McTigue, DDS, MS
Dr. McTigue has taught and practiced pediatric dentistry for over 35 years. He chaired the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at The Ohio State University, College of Dentistry and then served the College as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. He is past president of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and of the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped and is currently Vice-President of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. He has served consultantships to a variety of state and federal health agencies, the U.S. Air Force, the American Dental Association and the Commission on Dental Accreditation, which he chaired in 2002-2003.
William F. Waggoner, DDS, MS
Dr. Waggoner has two pediatric dental offices in Las Vegas, NV and has been in full-time private practice since 1996. He graduated from the West Virginia University College of Dentistry in 1980 and completed his Master of Science degree in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Iowa in 1982. From 1982-1995, Waggoner held full time academic appointments at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry and the Ohio State University College of Dentistry. Waggoner has numerous research publications in peer-reviewed journals and is the author of a chapter in a popular pediatric dental textbook. He has been a featured seminar speaker of the American Dental Association and has given dental presentations nationally and internationally. He has served as a consultant to the National Boards, American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and the Nevada State Dental Board.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will:
- Understand prevention of oral disease in the young patient
- Learn restorations for primary and young permanent teeth
- Know how to manage dental trauma in the child and adolescent patient
- Learn about and how to perform pulp therapy on primary and young permanent teeth
- Understand the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of oral pathology seen in children
- Learn behavior management approaches that are consistent with AAPD Guidelines and Policies

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) is recognized by the ADA Continuing Education Recognition Program (ADA CERP) to provide continuing education opportunities for dentists.
The AAPD specifies the maximum amount of continuing education credits as defined for each course. Members should only claim credits commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
While offering the continuing education credits described, courses are not intended to provide extensive training or lead to any type of certification in pediatric dentistry.
